Translation can appear to many as a logical career path for students of modern foreign languages. However, this field is very competitive with many translators opting to work in a freelance capacity, rather than working in-house. Given the competitive nature of this job market, having work experience, through an internship, during your studies can strongly enhance your job prospects and employability upon graduation. When applying for an internship in translation, there are certain skills that it is important to mention in order to distinguish yourself from other potential candidates.
First and foremost, your languages. Obviously, the more language you are able to communicate in the more attractive your application becomes to employers. Therefore, clearly stating, earlyon, in your letter what your precise skills are, the more interested in your application the reader will become.
Furthermore, skills such as patience, creativity and the ability to work to tight deadlines as well as mentioning any areas of translation that you specialise in (financial, marketing, fashion etc.) will not fail to enhance your application.
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am writing to you to express my strong interest in filling the twelve-month internship position that has become available at your company. I am currently in my final year of a modern foreign languages degree and I am looking to move into the career of Translating. I can communicate English, French and Arabic fluently and also have an intermediate level of Russian and Romanian.
I have some experience already in this sector; during my studies I have been working with some exchange students, helping them to translate their university work in English from their mother tongue. I have also spent a large amount of time travelling around the world, to help me to fund this and continue to travel for a long period of time I used my language skills to gain employment and earn a salary. My work experience history boasts experience working in hospitals and police stations and universities and throughout my time, I have built up a solid skill-set to do the job to the best of my ability.
I possess a high level of patience, am very creative when helping to find a solution when there is a moment of misunderstanding. Though I can speak many languages I am actually looking to move to France where I would like to continue on the career path of being a Translator. I have worked with people of all ages and am comfortable working with children and adults if and when required.
The experience of working within a highly recognised company such as yourself, means that I can gain some valuable experience with the finer points of this profession. I hope that the positive impact that I can make on your organization may also lead to employment with you, if a position becomes available.
I am available at your convenience for further discussion about any role which you may have available for me and how I can be of benefit to your company. Please feel free to contact me if you require any further information. Thank you for taking the time to look over my application and I look forward to hearing from you soon.
