Upon leaving school, whether it be at 16 having completed GCSEs or at 18 with A levels, entering the world of work can be a daunting prospect especially given the fact that today’s job market is so competitive and that other applicants may have more experience than you.

This is why when writing a cover letter as a school leaver there are a number of important steps to follow and elements not to forget.

Play to your strengths and try and make any potential weaknesses positive. Instead of talking about your lack of experience in the world of work, talk about how this means you are more adaptable to new experiences, not having any habits or routines in the world of work which could make your integration into the company difficult.

Example of cover letter for a school leaver

Dear Sir,

I am writing to you concerning the position in store welcomer advertised in the local newspaper job section, as I believe that I have the profile that you are looking for.

Having recently completed my GCSEs, gaining 5 grades A*-C including English and Maths, I am now ready to look for new challenges in the world of work.

As you will see from my enclosed CV I have been able to develop many solid transferable skills which will help me in this role. My tenure as a school prefect from 2013-2014 taught me not only responsibility and autonomy but it also instilled in me a strong respect for discipline and attention to detail. My other extracurricular activities such as captaining my local football team and being an active member in my neighbourhood youth club have also allowed me to develop excellent people and social skills. Furthermore, being outgoing and curious by nature, I believe that I would have no problems fitting into, and contributing positively to a dynamic and varied work force such as that of your company.

One of the main reasons I am so motivated to becoming a team member is the fact that working for a company like yours will allow me to learn and grow quickly. Being one of the leaders in the supermarket industry, not only in England but also overseas, means that I will undoubtedly have many possibilities to develop several new skills via a working relationship.

In the hope that my application retains your attention, I remain available for an interview at your convenience.

Yours faithfully
