Working in Environmental Health is a varied job, which offers workers a number of different roles and activities. Before entering into this job on a full time basis, it is often recommended that you gain experience, through a work-experience placement or internship. This shows future employers that you are a serious applicant who is genuinely interested in the sector, as well as allowing yourself to fully understand whether the role is right for you or not.

When applying for the internship it is important, firstly, to clearly explain what you are looking for. This information includes the reasons why you wish to participate in an internship programme and the time frame. It is also important to mention what areas of Environmental Health you wish to focus on in your internship.

Furthermore, as a company wants to offer opportunities to a student who has a genuine interest in what they do, showing that you have a knowledge of the company that you are applying to is also vital; their areas of specialisation, their current projects, their history etc...

Finally, mentioning any experience that you may have in the field, through previous placements and voluntary work will not fail to enhance your application.

Example of cover letter for an Internship in Environmental Health

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am writing to you today because I am looking for an Internship within your Environmental Health department, for 6 months. I am currently studying in my 2nd year at Nottingham University, working towards obtaining my degree in Environmental Health and am therefore looking to explore this field and gain valuable experience through on-the-job learning, whilst applying my existing knowledge and learning from experts in the sector.

Through thorough research into your company and a recommendation from my lecturer, Dr. Linda Hughes, I feel that you are the perfect company to aid my development.

I have already completed two internships; where my main role was to shadow a number of Environmental officers. During this time, I helped to oversee the management and implementation of local environmental health programs, including the monitoring of standards for food preparation, the organisation of school and community immunisation programmes, the investigation and control of environmental pollution and the oversight of widespread public education programmes.

I regularly take part in initiatives to help in my local community and abroad; having been over to Africa to do some voluntary work, helping to give vaccines. This is something that I thoroughly enjoyed and enhanced my desire to follow the career path into this sector.

On top of my experience I have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; experience in collecting data and writing reports, with sound critical analytical skills. I have some knowledge of the necessary legislation relevant to the role I would like to have. As you can see in my attached CV, I have gained regular praise from my lecturers about the work I have carried out.

I am available at your convenience for further discussion about any role which you may have available for me and how I can be of benefit to your company. Thank you for taking the time to look over my application and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely
